IN FOCUS: BOXENSTOP II DRUCK MACHEN

The exhibition

The IM BLICK exhibition ‘BOXENSTOP II – DRUCK MACHEN’ marks the second time that the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München is putting on a project in cooperation with the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München, with this project specially designed for the showcase passage in the Pinakothek der Moderne. The works on show were created in the lithography printmaking workshop over the course of two semesters. Under the slogan of ‘Druck machen’ (‘Making (im)prints’), the focus this time is on the traditional printing technique of lithography, which is still taught in the fully equipped workshops at the Munich Academy. The young artists were invited to explore the aesthetic possibilities of the technique in their works, going beyond the known boundaries of printmaking.

Meeting in preparation for Boxenstop II at the lithography workshop at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München

The partners in the collaboration announced a competition in spring 2019 as part of the preparations for the exhibition, with the challenge being to present an artistic idea that could be realized in lithography. Twelve students came before the judges from the group of over 40 applicants: Hiroyuki Abe, Xin Chi, Annemarie Faupel, Alexander Gerhold, Florian Huth, Lena Keller, Annabelle Mehraein, Florian Nöthe, Claudia Röhrle, Georg Schatz, Martin Spitzweck and Franz Stein. As a kind of dress rehearsal, the students first created one lithograph each, measuring 45 x 45 cm, which were published as a run of 24 copies. The sale of these lithographs is intended to support the publication accompanying the exhibition.

In their individual dialogues with lithography, the twelve young artists created works that are both exciting and challenging for the viewer. The students had access to the professional lithography printmaking workshop, with its stones, printing presses, litho inks and papers. Various lithographic processes were used: some of the students worked with the lithographic stone, others with lithographic plates made of aluminium; some chose single-colour printing, others multicolour printing.

Preparations for the printing process

The BOXENSTOP II project is based on the idea that, in a museum dedicated to contemporary art, people can not help wanting to see what young creatives in the city are up to, as well. This enables visitors to enjoy a first-hand experience of the artistic questions that will drive the talent of the future, and we can not wait to see what all our participating artists go on to do.
