Denkraum Deutschland 2020 Interspace: Digitality – Art – Society

About the exhibition

DENKRAUM DEUTSCHLAND, the annual temporary exhibition in the Pinakothek der Moderne, seeks to highlight and discursively explore artistic modes of thought in order to present the ways that artists, designers and architects see society, highlighting their political potential.

The central theme of DENKRAUM DEUTSCHLAND 2020 is digitality.
The term digitality was coined by media theorists and refers to the interweaving of digital and analogue realities. In times of travel restrictions and mandatory social distancing, it determines our lives more than ever, either making them easier or more complicated. Never before have communication and politics been so closely interwoven with technology as they are today, never before has the space where political opinion is formed been so uncertain, but at the same time so democratic. However, to what extent are individuals able to act in a self-determined way within a barely tangible, seemingly limitless reality? What can they rely on, where are identities deliberately manipulated, and where do they dissolve?

The intersections between the digital and the material can be understood as an “interspace” in which constant transformation and communication processes take place. Interspaces allow for information to become available without the constrains of time, space and human presence. They are sites of uncertainty and ambiguity. For artists and designers, on the other hand, these very interspaces are places of creative discovery and exploration, curiosity and development.
