Beautiful and vulnerable THE HUMAN FIGURE IN THE GARNERUS COLLECTION
About the exhibition
Collection+ | Rooms 25 and 26
More than almost any other collector, the art historian Hartwig Garnerus (*1943) focuses on the depiction of people in the period from Expressionism to Neue Sachlichkeit. In works by Hermann Blumenthal, Lovis Corinth, Otto Freundlich, Karl Hofer, Helmut Kolle, Carl Lohse, Marg Moll, Walther Ophey, Emy Roeder and Joseph Scharl, among others, loss and melancholy, but at the same time self-assertion, vulnerability, beauty, grace and joie de vivre are shaped in painterly and formal quality. In this way, the threatened humanity of society's outsiders also becomes palpable. The exemplary selection of paintings and sculptures from the private collection is accompanied by a catalog.
