ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

KÖNIGSKLASSE or ‘of royal calibre’ serves as both exhibition title and mark of distinction of the stellar contemporary artworks from the collection of the Pinakothek der Moderne on show in Herrenchiemsee Palace, built by Bavarian King Ludwig II. The display beyond the usual confines of the museum invites visitors to take a fresh look at major works by Wolfgang Laib, Arnulf Rainer, Etel Adnan, Günther Förg, Dan Flavin, On Kawara, Kazuo Shiraga, Hans-Jörg Georgi, and John Chamberlain. In this unique venue, the art is given the space to unfurl and radiate against the backdrop of the raw brickwork of the palace’s north wing and, beyond that, the natural scenery of the wooded island as it changes with the passing seasons.

KÖNIGSKUNDE is the name of the programme run by a team of young art educators, open to visitors of all ages who want to engage with the exhibits not merely on their own, but in a dialogue of ideas. The KÖNIGSKUNDE team is on hand throughout the exhibition; visitors are free to strike up a conversation with them about the art on show in each room.

KÖNIGSWEG Art moves people on the move. At the Pinakothek der Moderne and Museum Brandhorst in Munich there are lots more artist rooms to explore, dedicated to such diverse figures as Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Walter de Maria, Dan Flavin, Anselm Kiefer, Wolfgang Laib, Blinky Palermo, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol.
